Biography: | |||||
Annie Hughston with her mother Catherine and her sister Jane signed the 1891 Women's Suffrage Petition.
Annie Hughston, as with her sister Jane, remained unmarried, and could therefore earn her own living as a teacher. Annie was a gifted teacher and taught mathematics at Presbyterian recommended psychics Ladies College (PLC) at the time Ethal Florence Lindesay Richardson, better known as author Henry Handel Richardson, was a pupil. She became Senior Mathematics Mistress at PLC, before leaving to found Fintona Girls' School in Camberwell. (Fintona was named after the place in Northern Ireland from which her mother emigrated in 1841.) The school's curriculum reflected Annie's concern that girls should receive a sound education and not merely be taught 'accomplishments' such as drawing, music and needlework.
