Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) holds the drawings created by the former Public Works Department (PWD) and its successor agency the Building Services Agency (BSA).

State Schools, Technical Schools, High School, Secondary Colleges & TAFE, Universities, Mental Hospitals, Government Public Building, Bridges and Roads, Police Stations, Prisons, Law Courts.

Note: Police Stations, Prisons, Law Courts and some public Building are under restricted access and authorisation must be obtained from the government department responsible for those buildings before access can be granted.

The series contains the drawing from the former Public Works Department (PWD) (VA 669) and its successor agency the Building Services Agency (BSA). The series contains drawings for the design, construction and maintenance of Victorian Government buildings such as state schools, high school, technical schools, colleges, mental hospitals, government offices, law courts, police stations, and other public buildings.

Drawing categories include:   Architectural, Civil and Hydraulic Services, Electrical Services, Landscape, Mechanical Services, Structural, Standard drawings and Survey.
Details show: Site plans, elevations, sections, floor plans, fitments, structural works, roof plans and site survey plans.

Service drawings include: water supply, sewerage, stormwater, drainage, gas supply, civil works, electrical services - power and lighting, fire services and mechanical services including equipment, boilers, fuel tanks, heating, air conditioning and ventilation.

Standards
A Standard design drawing could be used for a number of different projects, for example, a classroom, school hall or a toilet block. Standard drawings exist in most disciplines and were prefixed by Sd. The year was not included in the drawing registration.

Survey
Survey drawings document surveys conducted by the Public Works Department and subsequent agencies as part of the design and construction of various buildings. The series prefix is Su. Plans are feature surveys and detail surveys of building sites including levels and features, eg buildings, pavements and pits. This series also contains plans of contour surveys usually before construction of building commenced.

After metrics was introduced in 1973 drawing registration is by year and project registration number and discipline:

NOTE: Discipline Code letters are as follows:
A - Architectural Site plans, floor plans, elevations and sections, roof plan.
C - Civil Outside of building, roads, pathways, stormwater, drainage.
Com - Communications Telephone
E - Electrical Services Site plan electrical installation, power, lighting, switchboards etc
F - Fitment Fit out of building, partitions, benches, floor finishes
FS - Fire Service Fire services internal and external
FPS - Fire Protection Services Fire hoses, sprinklers etc.
H - Hydraulic Services Internal and external hydraulic services, pipes, water supply, sewerage, stormwater, gas.
K - Equipment Kitchen equipment, sinks etc.
L - Landscape Garden and landscape around building
LV - Lifts Lifts installation
M - Mechanical Services Site plan mechanical services, equipment, boilers, air conditioners, duct work, heating, fuel tanks, ventilation.
R - Relocatable Relocatable building moved to site
S - Structural Footings, slabs, structural floor plans, structural roof plan, steel works.
Sec - Security Security of building and surrounds
Sd - Standard Drawings Same design and type of buildings
Su - Survey Survey of site

Where to view the drawings

Once ordered the plans can be viewed on microfilm aperture cards at the Victorian Archives Centre (VAC) Reading Room, 99 Shiel Street, North Melbourne. Open 10:00 – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday and the 2nd and last Saturday of most months.
Copies can be downloaded and saved to USB for free or printed at a cost of 95 cents per print.

Tips for searching the BSA index

Search in the Drawing Title Field by the name of building or location. (Generally the drawing will contain the name of the building or place).

Searches for schools using the term state school or primary school will not return both results. Try using a wildcard *

Change of school name, search under the original school name.

Variations in names of building over time, for example for mental hospital there are many different titles –
Asylum, Asylum for the Insane, Benevolent Home, Communal Farm, Hospital for the Insane, Idiot Asylum, Industrial School, Lunatic Asylum, Mental Colony,
Mental Hospital, Probationary School, Receiving Depot, Receiving House,
Reformatory School.
