Melbourne 24th March 1837 Sir,

Upon completion of my instructions of 14th Inst. you will return to this neighbourhood and survey the Southern branches of the Yarra Yarra River; where the Land is likely to become available for Settlers; marking Trees at intervals and attending to those Instructions furnished by the Surveyor General's Letter No 36/507. 10th Septr.

Upon completion of the Survey of the Western side of Port Phillip you will return to the Yarra Yarra River, and continue the Survey of it, as far as the Land is likely to be available for Settlers. Marking Trees at intervals, noting remarkable objects, and attending to the Instructions of the Surveyor General's Letter addressed to Mr Russell No 36/507 dated 10th September 1836. In the event of your not having a Copy, you must apply to that Officer, and take notes of those parts that relate to the General Survey. After tracing the River Yarra Yarra, you will commence surveying the Northern branches of it, where the waters are permanent; marking Trees as usual, so as to connect them with Section lines; which will be afterwards marked.

I have to direct your particular attention to the following Instructions, when you have completed your Survey of the Western Coast of Port Phillip.

To trace the Barwin River, from Large Marsh near Geelong upwards to its junction with the Marabul River and the latter with its tributory streams, to about (30) thirty miles upward, noting remarkable objects, as directed in my former Instructions; and
