Mary Spottiswoode, my great great grandmother was born in Albany, New York in 1838, the daughter of a Scottish emigrant, John Spottiswoode. In 1853, Mary emigrated to Melbourne on board the Birmingham at the age of 15 along with her father and three brothers. Her father, a builder, built a house in Vale St, St Kilda and subsequently added more cottages to the original accomodation. Mary married John Christmas Jones, a baker in 1864 and had six sons. Given the pervasiveness of males in her family, I'm not surprised Mary signed the 1891 Women's Suffrage Petition. She died in 1895 and is buried in the St Kilda Cemetery.
