Biography:
Lilian Helen Alexander was a one the first women to graduate from the University of Melbourne as a doctor and later as a surgeon. She preceded her medical studies with an Arts degree and spent some time as a teacher before embarking on her medical career.

Lilian was concerned with women's health and worked at The Women's Hospital, Carlton before becoming a founding staff member at the Queen Victoria Hospital for Women and Children. Lilian, along with her colleagues, Emma Constance Stone and Grace Clara Stone, was a founding member of the Victorian Women's Medical Association and served as inaugural secretary and later as president.

Lilian's mother Jane Alexander (nee Furnell) and sister Constance Alexander were both signatories to the Women's Suffrage Petition in 1891.
