Dear Sir,

At the meeting of the Fauna Survey Group of this club, on March 1st. It was resolved that an approach should be made to your Department on the matter of the protection of the habitat of Leadbeater's Possum (Gynnobelideus leadbeateri. Mr R. M. Warneke is conversant with the exact spots where the animals have been sighted. Inquiry could be made as to whether these places are in Crown Lands, State Forest or areas controlled by the M. & M.B.W., and the matter of preservation of habitat discussed with officers of the appropriate body or bodies. As most of the sightings have been within a few yards of the Marysville-Cumberland main road, a request might be made to the local municipality of the County Roads Board (whichever is responsible for the maintenance of the road)asking that the roadside vegetation be left as intact as possible. In particular, it would be most unfortunate if any "burning off" were carried out in the scrub bordering the road. this has been done within the past year or so at places between Marysville and the possum habitat. Some time during the past few years, an area of an acre or so has been bulldosed, apparently by Forest Commission employees, to provide a camp site and/or a machinery and road metal bay. this is in about the centre of the known colony of the possums. Liaison with the appropriate officers of the Forest Commission would probably ensure that any similar site in future is outside the area containing the possums.

Yours Faithfully,

Norman a. Wakefield

Leader, Fauna Survey Group

Dear Sir,

The matters raised in your letter of the 19th March in relation to the protection of the habitat of Leadbeater's Possum will receive attention. We agree that some action in this direction is necessary and arrangements are being made for Mr. R. M. Warneke to define the areas involved on a map, after which an examination will be made to find out who controls these areas. When this had been done, the owners or controllers will be approached on the matter of reservation.

Yours faithfully,

J. McNally
