Latitude and Longitude

Department of Sustainability and Environment Centroid for Flemington:

Flemington is an inner suburb of Melbourne, probably best known as the location of the Flemington racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup. Flemington also encompasses the localities of Newmarket and Travancore.

Place Name Meanings

According to the (VICNAMES - Historical Information Register) there is contention over how Flemington was named. However, it is likely to have been named after one of the following:

- farmer, wholesale butcher and produce merchant Robert Fleming. Robert selected the land where the racecourse is now sited and settled his family there, running sheep and cattle.

- John Wood Fleming, born 1837, son of Robert and later a councillor with the City of Brunswick

- Flemington Estate, in Scotland, named by pastoralist Mr James Watson, whose wife's father managed the estate
