How do I find records of children in the State Ward Registers?

For records of state wards, researchers can consult Victorian Public Record Series (VPRS) 4527 Ward Registers. The records are open to public access up to the year 1911. They are available on microfiche in PROV's reading rooms for the period c.1850-1893. An index is also available on microfiche in PROV reading rooms for the period 1850-1893.

For the period 1894-1911 researchers can consult the original registers in Victorian Public Record Series (VPRS) 4527. Each volume contains an alphabetical index. These records can be ordered via PROV's online catalogue at www.access.prov.vic.gov.aufor viewing in the Victorian Archives Centre reading room.

Researchers wishing to access records about wardships created after 1911, can contact Adoption and Family Records Services provided by the Department of Human Services (DHS) for advice. Their contact details are:

How do I find orphanage records?

PROV does not hold records of church run orphanages. If they were run by an Anglican Church you may wish to contact Anglicare Victoria. You can find a list of known Victorian orphanages, homes and institutions, and the organisations responsible for them listed on the Pathways Victoria Website at http://www.pathwaysvictoria.info/ For children in care of Catholic institutions contact McKillop Family Services.

I have obtained information pertaining to my own adoption from Adoption and Family Services. Does PROV hold any additional records which I may not have seen?

No. In providing you with records documenting your own adoption, Adoption and Family Services will have been in contact with us and obtained all relevant documentation.
