Regd 19 Chief Commissioner of the Goldfields to the Honorable The Colonial Secretary – enclosing a report from Captain Thomas upon the good conduct of the Police under Captain Carter.

Office of Chief Commr. Of Gold Fields Melbourne 18th Dec 1854 Sir, I have the honor to forward for the information of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor a report by Captain Thomas on the good and steady conduct of the Foot Police under Captain Carter in the late attack on the Eureka Stockade, which has been enclosed to me by the Resident Commissioner of Ballarat, with a request that in justice to the Officers and man concerned, it may be laid before His Excellency.

Camp Ballarat Dec. 14th 1854

Sir, I have the honor of receiving from communication from this days date My despatch to the Major General Commanding conveyed the expression of my sense of the very good conduct of the Police Force under my command during the late disturbances. I am extremely glad to take the present opportunity of more particularly bringing to notice the admirable steadiness of a body of foot police under Captain Carter on the occasion of The Resident Commissioner Ballarat

I feel called on to remark the cool and determined manner of Capt. Carter when leading his men into the Stockade; and I further desire to mention the fact of the Flag belonging to the Insurgents ( which had been nailed to the flagstaff) being captured by Constable King of the Force under the Command of that Officer.
