| Emma Benson was born Emma Mary Benson in 1870 in Ballarat, her parents being William and Marian (nee Arthur) Benson. Emma's father William was a civil engineer, mining surveyor and architect, b.Liverpool, England in 1812. He died in Ballarat in 1882 when Emma was only twelve years of age, leaving her mother with five children aged 4 to 15 years of age. Emma Mary Benson, her mother and three younger sisters moved to Melbourne by 1891, and Emma married William Thomson Dickens, an engineer, in 1895.
Emma and her mother Marian Benson both signed the 1891 Women's Suffrage Petition, her three sisters being under the age of 21 and thus ineligible to sign.
