Catherine and two of her daughters, Annie and Jane, signed the 1891 Women's Suffrage Petition. Their signatures on the petition are the only record of their direct involvement in the women's suffrage campaign. Nevertheless, each made their own mark on women's history in Victoria.

Catherine Hughston's mark was inadvertant: her personal financial misfortune resulted in improving the lot of married women in Victoria. She came from a prosperous family but when she married her considerable fortune went to her husband.

When her husband sold all her property without her consent and squandered the proceeds, it so angered her brother in-law James Buchanan, a member of the Legislative Council, that he devoted much energy to bringing forward the Married Women's Property Act (1884).
